We debuted our brand new Prince Roastpork Bao costume at the Brooklyn Book Festival on Sunday, September 23rd, 2012.
Thanks to the beautiful weather – sunny, but cool – wearing the suit didn’t turn out to be the sauna-like experience we had feared. If anything was warmer than we’d expected, it was the response from the crowd. I mean, we knew we’d get some attention, but we really didn’t expect to receive so much affection! Kids were rushing to touch the Bao and hug his capacious tummy. (Apparently, the effect on adults was to make them hungry… Mission accomplished, I’d say!)
This was our first time participating in the Brooklyn Book Fest, and it was amazing. Within 2 hours of the Festival’s opening, thanks to the eager, grabbing hands of the attendees, our entire print run of flyers ran out. Thankfully, there was a photocopy shop nearby where we could get more copies made. Our Dim Sum Warriors stickers were also a great hit with the kids who came to check out our bilingual comic iPad app. The response was tremendous, particularly from teachers. Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone! Launching a new comic/app/anything is very hard, and your enthusiasm and compliments were a huge sign of encouragement to us that we’re doing something worthwhile.
A huge doughy bao-hug to our hardworking crew – Kevin, James and Dion – as well as our friends Rose, Qianpeng, Jennifer, Lucas, George, and Jackie for helping us! We couldn’t have done it without you. We were also really happy to see friends we haven’t seen in ages, and some we’ve only met online: – Rory Myers (our fabulous designer, who finally got to see his work in all its printed glory), Britt, Finn and Haven; Jeong-Eun and Seung Keon; Mark and Nancy Jacobson and Paula; Calvin Reid and Jodie; Paul and Al; Edwin Huang; and Soo’s friends, Wendy and Camille.
Our one regret? That our printed trade paperback, Dim Sum Warriors Volume One – Enter the Dumpling, which collects Episodes 1 to 6 of the app, couldn’t reach us in time. But they’ll be here for the New York Comic Con - come check out our booth at the Javits Convention Center on October 11-14, and buy a fresh-off-the-presses preview copy!
